Speech title: Do Not Copy!

Audience Adaptation Plan

1. Audience attitude:

When I asked some of my audience if they have ever copied any book, I found that most of them thought it was easy, convenient and money-saving to get a copy of a book and they also thought that with so many people doing it, chances of getting caught were very small. As I put these data together, I determined that although my audience was not set against copying, they were not wholly for doing it either. Therefore, I put the majority in the group of not that worried about the consequences.

2. Reason:

I believe that the three reasons that are most likely to convince the audience are that copying not only is harmful to the publisher but also breaks the copyright, that copying is also a waste of natural resources, and that I, once as an editor, realize how an author would feel like if they know their publications are copied for personal uses without their permission.

3. Selecting an organization to meet audience needing:

Since the majority of my audience has no idea about the consequences they may take by copying, I will use my personal experiences and related law to draw their attention. Then I will illustrate the reasons logically to make them believe that they should stop copying.

Thesis Statement

The three reasons for stop copying are that copying breaks the law, that copying is a waste of paper, that is natural resources, and that I ,once an editor, know how other authors would feel if they know their publications are copied.

Body

I.                     Copying is a violation of law.

A.    According to Wikipedia, copyright is a legal concept enacted by most national governments, that gives the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited period of time.

B       According to the Ministry of Justice, whoever breaks the copyright will be given a sentence from six month to three years and fined two hundred thousand dollars.

C.    According to the Ministry of Justice, copying a few pages valuable for research from a magazine or something else is legal.

II.                   Copying is a waste of paper.

A.     Copying is a waste of paper, that is, a waste of natural resources.

III.                Copying shows no respect to the authors.

A.     I, once as an editor of a reference book, realize how painstaking and troublesome to edit a book, it is. So when I know people copy what I edit without my permission, how angry I would feel.

Conclusion

Since we know that copying will break the law, waste our natural resources, and show no respect to the original authors, we should stop copying anything for personal uses except for research.

Adaptation Plan

Speaking directly to the audience: During my speech, I'll use rhetorical questions and personal pronouns to show that my audience that I am talking to them directly.

 

Building credibility: I'll show my member card of California fitness center and use my own experience to show that I have some knowledge of how to use most equipment in a gym. Besides, I am taking a course called Exercise and Health in our school.

 

Getting and maintaining interest: Males or females, everyone wants to keep fit or lose weight to look attractive or healthy and I will tell my audience how I lost weight in the past by working out in a gym.

 

Facilitating understanding: I'll present the information clearly, use transitions to clarify my points and show visual aids.

 

Increasing retention: Again, use of visual aids helps retention and I will also repetition to ensure that my audience can follow.

 

Speech Outline

SPECIFIC GOAL: I would like the audience to know how to use the equipment in a gym properly and that working out in a gym doesn't mean building up muscles but can help burn the calories through aerobic exercise and lose real weight.

 

INTRODUCTION

I.                    Do you think you can lose weight by eating less and exercising more?

II.                 Do you think working out in the gym means solely building up muscles?

III.               I am not a real personal trainer in a gym, but I have taken more than fifty classes from two personal trainers. Today I am going to share with you the experiences I had in the gym.

 

THESIS STATEMENT: How to efficiently and safely work out involves three processes—Warming up, weight training and cooling down.

 

BODY

I.                    The first process is to warm up your body to prevent injury.

A.     Do some stretch on your own or by means of a stretch machine.

B.     Do some aerobic exercise, such as jogging for more than five to ten minutes.

II.                 The second process is to do weight training.

A.     Adjust the seat to a proper height and use proper weight.

B.     Exhale while using strength and inhale while relaxing.

C.     Always keep you body straight whatever training you do.

D.     Keep you body or head lean on the seatback.

E.      Don't keep you arms or legs too straight to prevent injury.

F.      Don't forget you wipe your sweats after finishing using machines.

III.               The third process is to cool down your body.

A.     Do some stretch on your own or by means of a stretch machine to prevent sore muscles.

B.     Walking slowly on a jogging machine.

 

CONCLUSION

After listening to my presentation, I think my audience will know proper ways to work out and lose more weight.

Topic: The experience of joining a book group

1. How relevant will the audience find this material to be?

As a student, everyone once read or hit the book for some purpose and a book group is a one in which each member of the group can share his or her ideas or feelings to help each other achieve a better understanding about the assigned book(s). In the near future, the possible reason for my audience to join a book group is to prepare for the graduate school.

2. How can I make it easier for audience members to comprehend the information I will share?

I will explain to my audience that the book group I join is not for any tests but for a better life or understanding of oneself. Besides, I will specify the way the book group goes on.

3. What common ground do audience members share with each other and with me?

Most of my audience members are students, as am I and whether in the past or in the future, they might or may join a book group for whatever purposes as I do now.

4. What can I do to enhance my credibility?

I will narrate my experience in the book group I join now and show my audience the assigned book for my book group.

5. What is my audience's initial attitude toward my speech topic likely to be?

Most audience members may be only mildly interested in my speech topic, but I hope their interest will be aroused much more after I tell them how the book group goes on and how different the book group is from the one they used to know.

6. What language or cultural differences do audience members have with each other and with me?

As an English major, everyone should be able to understand what I talk about in English. In terms of cultural differences, we all live and grow up in the same country, so there seems unlikely to have any cultural differences.

I. How to get along with others is not easy because of individual background.

A. It is more difficult to know oneself well than to know others.

B. If we can understand ourselves more, then we may have a better chance of getting along with others.

II. Knowing and facing inner self take great courage.

A. People often ignore their feeling and spend time talking about the occurrences.

B. When one has to face one's inner self and tell others about it, it's a challenge.

III. Live and learn plus practice.

Conclusion: You are what you read and what you do.
