Speech Plan No. 3

Topic: The less you use, the better your health is!

Audience Adaptation Plan

Audience analysis: Almost all my audience is composed of college students. As I know, on an average, most college students spend three to four hours a day using the computer. They use the computer to do homework or surfing on the Internet.

Background knowledge: All my audience is college students, so they should know what is good to their health and what is harmful to their health. I think they can identify the differences. Therefore, I want to let they know that spending too much on computer is harmful to their health.

Creating and maintaining interest: I will use outside information, a chart, and some report to get my audience's attention. I will also change my intonation while I talk about the diseases caused by using computer for a long time.

Organization: First, I will briefly talk about how many hours college students spend on the Internet. Then, I will point out that if people spend too much time using the computer, they will get some terrible diseases. Finally, I will conclude that if people spend less time using the computer, they would be healthier.

Building credibility: I will use the reports about spending too much time on the computer, and the information and statistics to let my audience believe what I say.

Motivation: The incentive I offer is that the audience can put more efforts to help people around them decreasing their time on using the computer. Through the information I give to them, they can know the bad influences of using the computer for a long time. I hope they can spend less time on the computer after they listen to my speech.

Speech outline

Specific goal: I want to convince my audience that they should spend less time using the computer, because spending too much time using the computer is not good to their health.

Introduction:

I. It is Information Age nowadays. Most people must have a computer in hand.

II. College students use computer to do their homework, search information on the Internet, send and receive e-mail, talk online with friends, and browse other's blog and so on.

III. College students often spend their time surfing on the Internet.

IV. According to John Tung Foundation , there are more than quarter of college students surfing on the Internet for more than 29 hours a week. In addition, more than 90 percent of college students spend 2 to 3 hours on the Internet each time.

V. Furthermore, according to Dr. 陳國華, a doctor of 國泰醫院,an American statistical data shows that spending more than 144 hours a month (probably about 3 to 4 hours a day) is an abnormal behavior.

Thesis statement: Spending too much time using the computer is not good to your health; for example, you would get computer vision syndrome, glaucoma, or feel your back paining, and the worst situation is death.

Body

I. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS):

a.       CVS is caused by our eyes and brain reacting differently to characters on the screen than they do to printed characters.

b.      On an average, spending more than 2 hours using the computer, nearly half people would experience CVS.

c.       If you spend more than two hours each day in front of a computer screen, you likely experience some symptoms of CVS:

1.      headache

2.      blurred vision

3.      neck pain

4.      dry and irritated eyes

5.      fatigue

6.      eye strain

7.      difficulty focusing the eyes

II. According to Dr. 陳國華, if you have a bad sitting gesture and sit for a long time and not stand up, you would become hunchbacked or feel your back paining. Besides, you would have some chronic diseases, such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Worst of all, it would influence the function of heart, and even cause arrhythmia or sudden death. Take a young man who lived in Hsinchu for example.

III. Some people would stay up all night using the computer. That would influence the function of immune system. It would cause liver dysfunction or extraordinary secreting of adrenaline.

IV. Those people who spend too much time on computer are bad at communicating with others face to face. Because they are afraid to talk to others, they tend to get the mental disorders, such as melancholia.

Conclusion:

After knowing the bad influences of spending too much time on the computer, do you still want to waste your time on the computer and ruin your health? I hope all of you think about this question carefully. Remember, the less you use, the better your health is.
